Larry S. Chapman
MPH, Chairman and Senior Consultant, Summex Corporation; Editor, The Art of Health Promotion

Mr. Chapman serves as Editor for Spiritual Health for the American Journal of Health Promotion and as Editor of The Art of Health Promotion newsletter, published every two months by the Journal. The newsletter provides an in-depth focus on issues in health promotion that are of concern to practitioners in the field. Each edition of the newsletter provides information that is designed to improve the effectiveness of health promotion programming. In addition to writing a number of the major articles for the newsletter, he also researches related articles providing abstracts for readers and completes the Closing Thoughts portion of each edition sharing this responsibility with Dr. O’Donnell.

Mr. Chapman has managed health promotion and health cost management programs in a variety of worksite settings and has been involved in the design, implementation and/or evaluation of more than 430 health promotion and disease prevention programs over the last 20 years, including programs in many of the Fortune 100 Companies. These projects include more than 90 financial incentive programs linked to health management issues, making him one of the most experienced and knowledgeable individuals in the field in the use of incentive systems linked to health and health behavior.

Mr. Chapman has also authored a major professional book on health cost management for the American Management Association and more than 40 workbooks dealing with a wide range of health promotion and population health management topics. These workbooks have been distributed widely in the U.S. and in 27 other countries and represent technical information and knowledge not available from any other source. An internationally recognized columnist and commentator, he has authored more than 125 columns, 20 major professional articles and 4 chapters for leading textbooks in the field of health education and health promotion. He customarily provides keynote presentations and workshops for more than 40 conferences each year.

He earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of California at Los Angeles in Environmental Health, a medical technology certification from St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica and a masters of public health degree in medical care organization from the University of Michigan. He has held faculty positions at City University of Washington State and the School of Public Health & Community Medicine at the University of Washington. He currently serves as adjunct faculty at Nebraska Methodist College in their Masters Program in Human Resources and Health Promotion.

Mr. Chapman is also founder, chairman and senior consultant for the Summex Corporation, an Indianapolis-based population health management company. Founded in 1993, Summex has pioneered applications for much of the newer prevention technology. Specializing in the application of creative technological applications to the management of the health and health costs of defined populations, he provides much of the technical and thought leadership for this fast-growing, progressive company.

Prior to his affiliation with Summex, he spent more than 10 years in the U.S. Public Health Service holding progressively more responsible positions in health care administration, planning and evaluation, health planning, health promotion and regional health system organization. Prior to this experience he served as the Executive Director of a regional ambulatory care center in the Boston area for two years.

Mr. Chapman has received a Lifetime Service Award from the Association of Worksite Health Promotion and two Commendation Awards for Meritorious Service from the U.S. Public Health Service. He has also served as the National Civilian Consultant for Health Promotion and Education to the Surgeon General of the U.S. Air Force for 13 years and currently serves as a consultant to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Center for Health Promotion and Prevention of the U.S. Army, the Mayo Clinic, the federal Department of Veteran’s Affairs, the National Coalition for the Promotion of Physical Activity and the Office of Health Promotion for the California State Department of Health Services.

Larry enjoys backpacking, mountain biking and river rafting in the Cascade and Olympic mountains around his home in Washington State. He also serves as President of the Church Board and as an Elder of a large non-denominational Christian church near his home in the Seattle area. He and his wife Ginny, a dental hygienist, have two sons, one graduating from college and the other from high school in June, 1999.
